After 10 years of war in 1996 the government forced people in northern Uganda to move to IDP camps (Internally Displaces People’s camp). Glory moved almost empty handed with her family to a camp, where they lived packed in a small grass thatched house together with thousands of others.

The life in camp was particularly difficult because there was little space and families couldn't cultivate food for themselves, but were dependent on food assistance. With moving, many people lost their work. NGOs supported families besides giving them food, also blankets and medication. In the IDP camp, a dream was born, about her becoming an education professional.

- There were few NGO workers, who were supporting education. I started to admire these women, many of them foreigners, who worked in schools. I saw for the first time a female riding a motorcycle and I even remember how one of them used lip gloss, that was something I had not seen before – and I wanted to be like one of these ladies; have a work, ride motorcycle and wear lip gloss, Glory thinks backs smiling.

Many of the children living in IDP camps became what are called “night commuters”, including Glory. Because it was safer to sleep in town than in a camp, in the nights the children packed their books and wondered to streets closer to the town.

- In the nights we studied and slept in the streets with my sisters and friends. After I turned 14, during the days I started working as a volunteer for NGOs in translation.

Due to excellent performance in school and volunteer work, she got various sponsorships and was able to attend high school and later university.
